Pam had been accepted to West Chester University of Pennsylvania and planned to study business. Instead, an unexpected meeting with Liberman changed the direction of her life.

Liberman reportedly spotted Pam while driving his yellow Corvette. The encounter eventually led to a relationship, and Pam decided to leave her college plans behind and join him on the road.

The two quickly became a recognizable pair at drag-racing events across the country. Liberman was already famous for his colorful personality and dramatic approach to racing, while Pam brought a completely different kind of attention to his team.

Initially, her job was to help stage his Funny Car at the starting line. Her presence immediately attracted attention from spectators and photographers, and before long she had become closely associated with the Jungle Jim racing operation.

Pam’s appearance became part of the team’s unmistakable image. She was often photographed beside the race car wearing the short shorts and tops that became her signature look during the 1970s.

But behind the photographs was someone who was actively involved in the racing operation.

Pam helped prepare the car before races, checked for fluid leaks, filled the engine with water and oil, packed the parachutes after runs, and helped move the vehicle following burnouts.

Her visibility eventually reached far beyond the racetrack. She appeared on the cover of Hot Rod Magazine, becoming one of the most recognizable women associated with drag racing at the time.

Despite the attention she received, Pam later emphasized that the racing partnership was about both of them rather than simply her appearance.

She and Liberman became one of drag racing’s best-known duos, combining his showmanship with her distinctive presence around the car.

Their relationship, however, was tragically short-lived.

On September 9, 1977, Liberman was driving his yellow 1972 Corvette at high speed when it collided with a bus. He died in the crash just days before his 32nd birthday.

The accident devastated Pam and changed her relationship with the sport forever. After Liberman’s death, she stepped away from drag racing and decided she would not work with another driver.

Even after leaving the racing scene, Pam continued to honor Liberman’s memory and occasionally took part in events connected to his legacy.

She later married Funny Car owner Fred Frey. Following their divorce, she married Bill Hodgson, who was involved in tuning a nostalgia Funny Car.

One question that has often surrounded Jungle Pam is whether she ever actually raced a car herself.

The answer is no. Pam was deeply involved in the racing operation, but she never became the driver. She has even joked about having no desire to get behind the wheel of one of those powerful machines.

Decades later, her name remains closely connected with the golden era of American drag racing.

Pam Hardy’s story represents more than a collection of famous photographs. She became part of a period when drag racing was driven by personalities, spectacle, mechanical skill, and enormous amounts of horsepower.

Although her time on the drag strip lasted only a few years, the image of Jungle Pam standing beside Jungle Jim’s race car became an enduring part of motorsport history.

Today, Pam has largely embraced a quieter life while remaining connected to the drag-racing community and its grassroots traditions.

For longtime racing fans, however, Jungle Pam remains instantly recognizable — a woman whose brief but unforgettable presence helped define the visual culture of 1970s drag racing.

She became a 1970s racing icon almost overnight.
