Walter Carr, a 20-year-old college student from Alabama, became a national symbol of determination after walking nearly 20 miles through the night to make it to his first day at a new job.<\/p>\n

The night before Carr was scheduled to work for the moving company Bellhops, his 2003 Nissan Altima broke down.<\/p>\n

With his backup rides unavailable, Carr refused to call off his first day. Instead, he used Google Maps to calculate the walking distance and discovered it would take roughly seven hours.<\/p>\n

Around midnight, he set out on foot from his home in Homewood, Alabama, determined to reach the family’s home in Pelham before the morning move began.<\/p>\n

Several hours later, police officers spotted Carr walking along the road. After hearing why he was walking in the middle of the night, they stopped to help him.<\/p>\n

The officers took him to get breakfast and eventually drove him to the home where he was scheduled to work.<\/p>\n

When the homeowners learned what Carr had done just to make it to work on time, they were deeply impressed. Jenny Lamey, one of the customers, shared his story online, and it quickly went viral.

Carr had not only arrived on time\u2014he was ready to work.<\/p>\n

The story eventually reached Luke Marklin, the CEO of Bellhops. Marklin was so impressed by Carr’s determination that he drove from Tennessee to Alabama to meet him personally.<\/p>\n

Then came an incredible surprise.<\/p>\n

Marklin gave Carr the keys to his own 2014 Ford Escape<\/strong>, telling him that the vehicle would be in better hands with Carr.<\/p>\n

The generosity didn’t stop there.<\/p>\n

Lamey created a GoFundMe campaign with an original goal of $2,000 to help Carr with his car troubles. The campaign eventually raised $91,849 from more than 2,300 donations<\/strong>. Carr later decided that money raised beyond a certain amount would benefit the Birmingham Education Foundation, an organization that had helped him as a student.<\/p>\n

What began as a seven-hour walk in the darkness became an extraordinary story of perseverance.<\/p>\n

Carr could have stayed home when his car broke down. Instead, he chose to walk.<\/p>\n
