A forgotten tape captured a chilling view of September 11.<\/p>\n

For 23 years, the footage remained hidden among old tapes.<\/p>\n

Then it was found\u2014and revealed an angle few had ever seen.<\/p>\n

For more than two decades, a rare recording of the September 11 attacks remained forgotten among old tapes. When it was finally discovered and published, the footage offered an unusual perspective on the moments when the Twin Towers collapsed.<\/p>\n

The video was filmed by Kei Sugimoto, who was only 24 years old at the time. He was on the rooftop of a building on St. Marks Place in New York, carrying his camera to document what was happening in the distance.<\/p>\n

The recording, which lasts about six minutes, shows black smoke rising over the city before capturing the collapse of both towers. The footage was considered particularly rare because the camera was positioned from an angle different from many of the well-known recordings from that day.<\/p>\n

Sugimoto later explained that he initially did not fully understand what was happening. He thought it was an accident involving a massive fire. But after seeing the second plane crash into the other tower, he realized that the event was deliberate.<\/p>\n

Ironically, he did not record the impact of the second plane. According to his recollection, after witnessing the moment, he ran to get his camera, realizing that what was happening was not an ordinary accident.<\/p>\n

The tape remained unpublished for years. It was not until 2024, while cleaning out a closet, that Sugimoto discovered several boxes containing old Hi-8, Digital-8, and DV tapes.<\/p>\n

When he began examining them, he found that a significant portion had been damaged over time. Some were blank, while others had suffered serious data damage. This prompted him to urgently begin digitizing whatever footage could still be recovered.<\/p>\n

Among the tapes was the September 11 recording.
