On March 6, 1981, a courtroom in L\u00fcbeck, West Germany, became the scene of one of the country\u2019s most controversial acts of vigilante justice. Marianne Bachmeier was sitting through the trial of Klaus Grabowski, the man responsible for the death of her seven-year-old daughter, Anna.<\/p>\n

Anna had been killed in May 1980. Grabowski, a 35-year-old former butcher, had a history of sexual offenses involving children. During the investigation, he admitted that he had killed Anna, although he later claimed that he had acted after the girl\u2019s mother threatened to report him.<\/p>\n
For weeks, Bachmeier had been forced to relive the tragedy through the legal process. Evidence was examined, witnesses were questioned, and lawyers argued their cases.<\/p>\n

Bachmeier had secretly brought a small Beretta .22-caliber pistol into the courtroom. On March 6, she pulled the weapon from her bag and fired at Grabowski.<\/p>\n
Reports differ slightly about the exact number of shots, but German sources including WDR report that she fired eight times, with six bullets striking him. Grabowski died in the courtroom before the trial could reach a verdict.<\/p>\n
Bachmeier did not flee. She was arrested at the scene.<\/p>\n
The shooting immediately shocked West Germany.<\/p>\n
But the public reaction was far more complicated than simple condemnation. Some people viewed Bachmeier as a grieving mother who had taken justice into her own hands. Others argued that, regardless of what Grabowski had done, killing him inside a courtroom could not be justified.<\/p>\n

In 1982, Bachmeier herself went on trial. She was ultimately convicted of Totschlag<\/em>, a German legal category generally translated as manslaughter or unlawful killing without the specific characteristics of murder, along with illegal possession of a firearm.<\/p>\n In March 1983, she was sentenced to six years in prison.<\/p>\n She served only part of the sentence before being released.<\/p>\n Years later, Bachmeier gave interviews about the case. Her account evolved, and in a 1995 interview she acknowledged that the shooting had not simply been an instantaneous reaction but something she had thought about and planned.<\/p>\n That revelation added another layer to a case that had already divided public opinion.<\/p>\n Marianne Bachmeier eventually left Germany and lived abroad for several years. Later, she returned to Germany after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n She died in L\u00fcbeck on September 17, 1996, at the age of 46.<\/p>\n She was buried beside her daughter, Anna.<\/p>\n Decades later, the case remains difficult to categorize.<\/p>\n To some, Marianne Bachmeier became a symbol of a mother pushed beyond the limits of what she could endure.
