When Jayne Hardman\u2019s dog playfully knocked her in the nose, the UK woman was shocked when it triggered a diagnosis of a rare disease that would cost her nose. Looking back, she says her beloved pet \u201csaved\u201d her life by \u201calerting\u201d her that something was wrong.<\/strong><\/p>\n

One day back in 2012, the UK\u2019s Jayne Hardman was playing with her \u201creally large Neapolitan Mastiff,\u201d CeCe, when the nearly 130-pound dog accidentally jumped up and hit her in the nose.<\/p>\n

At first, it seemed like nothing more than an unlucky\u00a0knock, but when persistent nosebleeds and unusual swelling refused to go away, she realized something wasn\u2019t right.<\/p>\n

Looking back, she\u00a0explained\u00a0it was that one moment with CeCe that changed everything.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter that my nose was just weird and it sort of blew up a little bit and I had lots of nose bleeds,\u201d Hardman told\u00a0This Morning. \u201cShe was just being playful\u2026But my nose continued to be weird. So, thought I better go to the doctors and see what it was.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rare autoimmune disease<\/h2>\n

Two years later,\u00a0doctors\u00a0eventually discovered she had vasculitis, a rare autoimmune disease that, in her case, attacked the blood vessels in her \u201cupper airways, eyes and sinuses.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0Cleveland Clinic, vasculitis causes inflammation that can reduce blood flow, damaging organs and body tissue if left untreated. The disease can affect any blood vessel in your body, including ones that are connected to the heart, skin, brain and stomach.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the\u00a0dog\u00a0saved my life because if you don\u2019t get treated, you\u2019re dead within a year. So, I think she sort of alerted me that there was something going on with my nose and she saved my life,\u201d she told the hosts in the July 2026 interview.<\/p>\n

\u2018Nose collapsed into my face\u2019<\/h2>\n

Although doctors identified the illness, Hardman says the treatment she received early on wasn\u2019t enough to stop the damage.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was basically necrotizing,\u201d Hardman explained. \u201cMy nose collapsed into my face over the period of three years. So, my nose was completely flat in my face.\u201d<\/p>\n

As her appearance changed, everyday life became increasingly difficult.<\/p>\n

\u201cI walked around like that for about 18 months. Leaving the house was incredibly difficult because every time you go out, people would stare at you,\u201d she said, adding that she was repeatedly asked \u201cincredibly intrusive questions, very rude questions.\u201d<\/p>\n

By 2017, she said her \u201cnose that had sunk straight back into my face\u201d and surgeons determined it had to be removed as the damaged tissue could no longer be saved.<\/p>\n

Magnetic noses<\/h2>\n

Six weeks after surgery, Hardman received a prosthetic nose that she said is attached to magnets \u201cdrilled into my skull.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just look normal again,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen you\u2019ve got a facial deformity\u2026difference, it\u2019s incredibly hard to go out and face the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rather than hiding the prosthetics, Hardman now talks openly about them \u2013 and even jokes about having options.<\/p>\n

She keeps what she calls a \u201cselection of noses\u201d in a wooden Twinings tea box.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got a drunk nose that I wear,\u201d she joked, pointing to the \u201cred one.\u201d \u201cWhen I\u2019ve had a few glasses of wine, I just put my drunk nose on.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also has another version for sunnier days.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I get a little bit of summer [sun] and a little bit of color on my cheeks, I have to have a slightly more tan one,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

But the nose she wears every day in her \u201cwonderful life\u201d is the one she \u201cloves the most.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI hated the way I looked and couldn\u2019t look anyone in the eye,\u201d she reflected. \u201cNow, I\u2019m loving life again. My prosthetics gave me my freedom back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018I do still have snot\u2019<\/h2>\n

She is now in remission and continues chemotherapy every six months to keep the disease under control.<\/p>\n

These days, Hardman regularly gives her social media followers a candid look at life with her prosthetic, answering questions with honesty and plenty of humor.<\/p>\n

In a TikTok clip, Hardman explained, \u201cI do still have snot, I do still sneeze, I can smell, I can taste, and I breathe exactly the same as everybody else\u2026When I get a cold, I don\u2019t really get it in my nose anymore. I can feel it a tiny bit but it\u2019s mainly in my eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n
