Why do babies cry when someone gets too close to kiss them?

In the first few months of life, their visual acuity is much lower, and they can only see clearly at a distance of about 20–30 centimeters, roughly the distance between a baby’s face and a parent’s face during feeding.

Newborn babies don’t see the world with the same sharp focus as adults.

  • Overstimulation: A sudden, giant face looming directly in their field of vision can be startling or overwhelming for an infant.
  • Limited Focus: Newborns have very short-range vision (best at about 8 to 12 inches), so an abrupt close-up fills their entire world rapidly. [1]
  • Sensory Adjustment: Babies rely heavily on calm, predictable cues and gentle handling; intense, fast movements can trigger a startle response.

When someone suddenly moves extremely close to a baby’s face, features can become distorted.
A nose, mouth, or eyes may dominate their field of view, creating a strange-looking image compared to what adults normally perceive.
Babies are also still learning how to process faces.
Human faces are one of the first things they become interested in, and their brains rapidly develop specialized systems for recognizing expressions and emotions.
